June Newsletter 2013

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is hard to believe that we are in the last month of yet another school year.  May was a very busy month and June looks like being just as busy, so read on as there is a lot of detail in this Newsletter.

School Closures in June & date of re-opening
The school will be closed on the following days:

School is closed on Fri. 31st May, Mon. 3rd  & Tues 4th June       School closed for 3 days
Fri.  28th June     Summer Holidays   School closes at 12 noon

Thurs., 29th AUGUST ‘13   SCHOOL RE-OPENS     FULL DAY FOR Snr. Inf. – 6th

Sports Days in St. Brigid’s
As already stated in the May newsletter and with the help of some parents we hope (Weather permitting) to hold two Sports days, one on the Wed., 12th June for Jnr. Infants to 2nd class  (Divided in two sessions) and one on Thurs., 13th June for 3rd to 6th class (combined activity day).
For the Senior Sports days we are continuing the format, we have been using for a number of years now, an Activity Day.  I will need approx 3 parent volunteers to help with the Activity Day on Thursday 13th June.  If you are willing to do so, please telephone the school and leave your name with Sheila.

St. Brigid’s Gaelic Football League
Well done to all the girls in 4th and 5th classes who have been taking part in the Gaelic Football League.  It is nearing an end now and we will have a Grand Final in June.  A big thank you to the 6th class girls who have organised and managed the teams and of course to Jane Devlin who as always organised the League.

Update on Rosie, our Blue Tit
Rosie, our Blue Tit has returned to the nest. We are delighted to have her back again this year.  As we go to press there are 7 eggs in her nest and they are being monitored by all, especially the girls in Room 3

Graduation Ceremony:
The Graduation Ceremony for our current 6th class pupils will take place in the school on the evening of Thursday, 20th June at 7p.m. in Our Lady of Dolours Church. (further details will follow).  We wish all our 6th class every success as they move on to Secondary school.

Cake & Craft Sale
We recently had a fantastic Cake & Craft Sale in St. Brigid’s School organised by the girls in Room 14 along with Joan,  Ms. O’ Reilly & Ms. Murphy.  With the help of all the parents & Staff of St. Brigid’s we raised a fantastic €3,048 which will be split between the Irish Cancer Society and the Russian Orphanage fund.  Both of these charities are very close to the hearts of all the staff & pupils of St. Brigid’s .

School Jackets:
The company providing the school jackets will be at the school to take orders on Tuesday,
25th June from 1.30p.m. to 2.30p.m, when the new Junior Infants come to visit the school,
This will be your ONLY opportunity for all classes to order jackets before September.
The jackets are NOT available in Lynch’s or directly through the school.
**There will also be a small amount of  2nd Hand uniforms on sale for JNR. INFANTS ONLY at 1.30pm on Tuesday 25th June.

Second Hand Uniform Sale  -  Snr Infants to 6th :
The Parents Association will be holding the annual Second Hand Uniform Sale on the evening of Tuesday, 25th June from 7p.m. to 8.30p.m.  in the school.

Uniforms:
 In order to facilitate the second hand uniform and tracksuit sale the children may wear their ordinary clothes to school from Friday, June 21st .   Please make sure that they wear runners as they will have sports during the school day.
 Please note that we will follow the usual procedure of donating the uniforms to the school.
Donated clean uniforms can be left in to the school on either  Fri. 21st  June or on the morning of Mon. 24th June.

Any parent wishing to sell her daughter’s uniform privately is asked to do so outside the school at another time.    We are very grateful as always to the Parents Association for all their help in relation to this Sale.

Second Hand Books
Arrangements will be made this year for the girls from 6th class to sell books to girls in 5th class and girls in 5th class to sell to 4th class and so on down to 2nd class.
We would encourage parents to sell on books as keeping them for children following on 2 to 3 years later does not work out as the books may be updated.   Further details will follow and the new Book Lists will be available soon. New schoolbooks can be bought at any of the major bookshops like “Easons” or “Wiseowl Books” or on line on at  www.wiseowl.ie   or www.schoolbooks.ie .  If possible, please try to buy the books early in the summer, as they do tend to go  ‘out of stock’ or ‘out of print’ as demand increases.

First Holy Communion:
The children in 2nd class received their First Holy Communion on Saturday 25th  May and I congratulate them all on this special occasion.  My thanks to their teachers Ms. Edwards and Ms. Keogh for preparing them so well.  Thanks also to the choir members for singing at the Mass they really added to the ceremony.  I am also grateful to the Parents Association and their helpers for organising the reception and of course to the Glasnevin Youth Band who entertained us.

Stamped Addressed Envelopes:  School Reports are sent home for each pupil.  As previously requested, please send in a S.A.E. as soon as possible, in order that you receive your child’s report promptly.  Only children who send in an S.A.E. will receive a report.  Please note, a 60c stamp needs to be put on the envelopes this year.

End of School Year
School closes on Friday 28th June at 12 noon and reopens on Thursday, 29th August 2013
The full School Calendar will be issued in September.  The main holidays, however are listed below.

As we approach the end of another school year I would like to thank you all for your support and co-operation.  Sincerest thanks to all the staff for their work with the children and to Sheila, our secretary, Jim, our caretaker, Joan & Susan our Special Needs Assistants and Martina our classroom assistant who all help to keep the wheels in motion.

As always, I acknowledge the work of those parents in the Parents Association, & the Green Schools Committee, their contribution adds greatly to the school in many ways.
On behalf of the Board of Management and Staff I wish you all a happy and safe summer holiday.

Yours sincerely
Evelyn O’ Brien  & Staff
