Tree Planting

14/2/2017

Today, we planted a variety of trees such as a Rowen, Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Crab apple and Alder. Before we planted the trees we did a bit of research on the different trees. We learned lots of folklore for each tree and chose the one we most liked. We then planted the tree and made the surrounding area visible to others so that our tree does not get trampled on.

How many years old was the tree below?
Tip: Count the rings.

Sr. Evelyn Comes on a Special Visit

We were very lucky to have some special visitors to our school on Tuesday to mark Catholic Schools Week and to learn more about saving our planet.
Sr. Evelyn (who used to be our school principal) and her helper told us all about Laudato Si, a special letter Pope Francis wrote to remind us that we share our planet with all the beautiful animals and nature that make Earth so special.
We watched some lovely videos and powerpoints and had a great discussion about what we can do to help our planet. We then made a promise with our thumb prints to do our best  and to spread the message to other people!
Thanks Sr. Evelyn and well done everyone!

Save our Bees!

6/12/2016

Last Wednesday, a selection of classes enjoyed a really interesting and funny visit from Leif Barry. Leif is an environmental scientist. His job is to find out about all the special things in our environment and then to tell us how we can work together to protect our environment from being destroyed.

He described and explained all about the different species of butterflies, moths, wasps and bees that we have in Ireland. He showed us beautiful photographs that he took himself on his various nature walks. Then he told us that sadly our wonderful and extremely important bees are going to become extinct if we don't help them out by protecting their habitats (where they live) and leaving them lots of food to eat (the pollen from wild flowers).

We can play our part in St. Brigid's to save the bees and other important pollinators!

Leif very kindly left us with some gorgeous wildflower seeds that we can plant out in our school grounds early next year. We can also leave some of our grass uncut so that we can create a wildflower meadow to help provide food for our winged friends. Fingers crossed we attract lots of bees, butterflies and other pollinators to keep us company on yard next summer! Thanks Leif! :-)

6th Green Flag-Global Citizenship Litter & Waste.

Last week we had a very special visitor to the school to raise our 6th Green Flag for Global Citizenship Litter & Waste. Mairéad Ronan came in to chat to all the children about the flag and what they had to do to achieve it. Mairéad was soo impressed with the amount of work that we do in the school and felt privileged to raise our flag.

We welcomed last years members of the Green School Committee back to the school to celebrate with us and also announced the new members of our committee. Third class were working very hard writing their letters of application to the Green School Committee. The standard was very high this year but unfortunately we can only pick four people. Congratulations to Meisha & Lucette from room 15 and Harriet & Alice from room 1. Their letters are up on the Green School notice board if anyone wants to read them.
