Were you in Tolka Park lately? Did you walk past Our Lady of Dolours Church in the past while? Did you notice that Glasnevin in general is sparkling?? Well that's probably because the girls in St. Brigid's were so busy over the past while celebrating Spring Clean Week! Thanks to all who took part during the week tidying and cleaning up school classrooms, our beautiful school grounds and our local area. You have all played your part to make our school and environment clean and safe for us all (humans and wildlife) to share! See can you spot yourself in the slideshow below! Maybe you are sorting the waste into the right bin, maybe you are picking up rubbish or maybe you are busy sweeping. Either way, you all look very snazzy in your Spring Clean gear! :-) Special thanks to everyone who made this event possible.

St. Brigid's will be taking part in the National Spring Clean from 9th-13th May. Children will be provided with clean up kits such as plastic bags in which to collect the litter and recyclable material, some tabards to keep our clothes clean and some grabbers and gloves to keep our hands safe and clean. We hope to foster a sense of civic pride, place and community as well as promoting environmental awareness whilst caring for our community. Keep a look out for some photographs. On Thursday, February 25th 2016, the Greenschools' Committee along with Ms. Keogh and Ms. Freeman were delighted to attend the First ever Green-Schools EXPO in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. All the girls were very excited to see all the interactive exhibits, displays, fun-filled activities and learn loads of new information about the great work being done all around Ireland in other Greenschools. We learned that a regular shower uses 12L of water every minute and a power shower uses 24L in a minute. We all decided we're going to try and be more mindful of the time we spend in the shower in future. We also saw an amazing greenhouse made from recycled bottles and bamboo sticks. We've added that to our list of potential future projects. We made cool bracelets from old t-shirts and got to plant some seeds in recycled newspaper pots. We even got to meet Nick Sheridan, news2day presenter from RTE and some girls were lucky enough to get an autograph. We all had a fabulous day, learned lots of new information and saw great ideas. We also got lots of lovely souvenirs from the day. Take a look at the pictures to see just some of the fun we had. Everyone is already looking forward to returning to the EXPO next year. St. Brigid's took part in a very successful Low Energy Day in school on Monday, 29th February. As well as learning all about conserving energy over the past while in class, we also took part in lots of other fun events on the day. Each class from Junior Infants right up to 6th class displayed an energy-themed experiment in the school hall and we all got to see and interact with each others' work. We learned loads! In the afternoon, there were two table quizzes in the hall. We learned loads again! ;-) Throughout the day, our Green Schools committee acted as monitors checking energy conservation in our classrooms. We really all made a really big effort to have switches and appliances turned off when we weren't using them. We also kept our heating turned down and our sensor lights dimmed. The teachers also made a huge effort not to use the microwave, the photocopier or printers. Dave was busy taking energy readings for us at the start and end of the day and hopefully we will be able to see that we saved lots of energy! Many thanks to all who organised the day so well, particularly Ms. Keogh, Ms. Freeman, Ms. Hassett and Mr. Manning. It has taught us many ways we can help save energy in our school and homes in the future. Have a look at the slideshow below to see all the action! It's time for a treasure hunt!
See can you find these labels on any of your appliances around your home! It will tell you how energy efficient they are! How energy efficient is your home??!!! Click on the chart below to find out more information! Very well done to Emily from Ms. Keogh's class who was the winner of our recent motto competition! Thanks to all the teachers and parents who encouraged their kids to take part and get blogging! It was really hard to choose a winner from a whopping 127 entries but Emily came out on top in the end!
Very well done to all who took part and of course special congratulations to Emily! So (drumroll) our new motto is: Switch off and save is the best way to behave!! Here in St. Brigid's, we are great at recycling so let's keep doing our bit to make our school and planet a beautiful place for everyone! We collect everything on the following list. Why not see if you have any of these items at home and we will gladly take them here in school!
At times during the year we hold a fund-raising clothes and textiles collection in school- many thanks to the PA for organising this! Watch out for any upcoming events!
Our staff also recycles our old computers and electrical goods where possible. It's competition time so put your thinking caps on to compose a new motto for our new theme- Global Citizenship- ENERGY!!!!
All entries must be posted to the GREEN SCHOOLS blog!! St. Brigid's are now taking the first steps towards applying for their 7th Green Flag!!!!
The new theme we are exploring is Global Citizenship Energy. We can all play our part and work as a team to protect the world we live in, starting with very small changes. Our small changes can make a huge difference to our world! Let's think about the energy we use in school and how we use it! How do we use energy in our own homes? Find out what the words Climate Change mean! Have a look at a very interesting video by clicking on the globe! Room 14 have been working their socks off over the last few weeks in the run up to Hallowe'en constructing monsters in art class. The only rule was that the monsters had to be made completely from recycled materials. Didn't they do a terrifyingly terrific job?!
Ps Well done to everyone who made their own costumes this year! :-) |
