Keeping Active with 'Go Noodle' in the Computer Room

26/4/2015

We really enjoyed Active School's Week last week in the Computer Room. We used the Go Noodle website to choose from a wide variety of Brain Breaks to get more active and motivated for our day. This is a fantastic free website that allows you to choose from a wide variety of energising activities.

We zumba-danced, sang, ran, exercised, pop-see-koed, did some yoga, breathing techniques and even brainercises!  One of the favourites of the week was definitly the song 'Pop-See-Ko' by the Koo Koo Kangaroo brothers.

Go to the Computer Blog to see some photos of the different classes having some 'Go Noodle' fun.

Why not try it at home too! Go to: www.gonoodle.com to sign up for free and get more active.

Gaeilge sa Rang Ríomhaire

Sa rang ríomhaire, táimid ag caint Gaeilge le Ms. Edwards, ag imirt cluichí Gaeilge, ag déanamh powerpoint as Gaeilge agus Avatar podcasts as Gaeilge freisin.

Féach ar na 'Focail Scamaill' a rinne rang a trí. Tá siad bunaithe ar na téama ÉÁDAÍ, SCOILE, BIA agus SPÓIRT. Nach bhfuil siad go hálainn!

[In our computer classes, we are speaking Irish to Ms. Edwards, playing Irish games, making Irish powerpoints and avatar podcasts.
Look at the 'Word Clouds' that 3rd class made. They're based on the themes of clothes, school, food and sport.  Aren't they beautiful! ]

Internet Safety - Be SMART when surfing online!

9/2/2015

Tuesday 10th of February is 'Safer Internet Day 2015' and this year's theme is 'Let's create a better internet together'.  We are focusing on Internet Safety for this month in our computer class and with our class teachers.

We are learning how the internet can be a very powerful and useful educational tool.  It is also a portal to an online world, so it is important to be responsible and safe while surfing the web.

Parents may find our 'Internet Safety' section under the Parent's tab useful. WEBWISE.IE is also a very informative website for children and parent's to use when learning how to stay safe online and what  apps and websites are age appropriate.

See our Computer Class Blog to find out more about what we are doing in our computer class.

Powering Kindness Week : What RAK (Random Act of Kindness)will you do this week?

19/1/2015

This week is Powering Kindness Week across Ireland.  Acts of kindness can happen anytime, anywhere so why not perform a good deed and brighten someone's day today! We believe strongly in spreading kindness here in our school and we hope to work hard to spread even more this week.

During computer class, some girls visited www.poweringkindness.ie to get some ideas for good deeds and we spread our kindness a little further by pledging our good deeds on behalf of a chosen charity.

4th class designed some word clouds onwww.tagxedo.com based on their idea of what kindness is. Have a look at our slideshow below.

Hour of Code
This week, for Computer Science Education Week, we are having great fun learning how to 'code' in our Computer Class.

'Coding' or Computer programming is like giving your computer step by step instructions and telling it what to do. When you do this you can create a game, make an animation, a story and much more.

The people at CODE.ORG have organised a worldwide event known as the 'Hour of Code'. Last year more than 15 million students worldwide tried coding in one week.  This year, the aim is to reach 100 million!! So let's join in and make this happen.  After all, in this technological world that is ever advancing, computer programming is becoming a life skill.

Anybody Can Code
CODE.ORG have developed lots of fun, enjoyable and easy to follow tutorials on their website for beginners to start coding. Celebrities and people in power are endorsing that more schools should teach children how to code and we are quickly seeing the benefits as our problem solving, mathematical and logical skills increase as we figure out how to programme our games and animations. We often work with a partner for coding so we can figure it out together too.

Check out our school Computer Blog to see what activities are suitable for different age groups or go to code.org/learn and choose a suitable coding activity yourself.  Some firm favourites in class so far have been the Candy Quest, Frozen, Flappy birds and Angry Birds tutorials.

Why not try them out at home and teach someone in your family how to 'code'. Then tell us:

What was your favourite coding activity and why?
